I'm a bad cinema goer. No matter how good a movie is, I would doze off. I dunno.

But for the first time, after so many good movies this year, I didn't fall asleep nor I looked forward to the ending with Guardians Vol. 2.

No, that's not because I so love Baby Groot with all his tantrums and 3- word dialogues; it's probably because the movie is entertaining from that first scene with Kurt Russel looking like a dashing 35-year old, up to the epic post-credit scenes.

What makes Guardian Vol 2 that entertaining? Was it the storyline? The plot? The new enigmatic characters such as Mantis and what's that villain name? Taserface? I like him, too. He's such a character.

I love the overall choreography of action, well-timed comedy, necessary soap-ish drama, the mention of David Hasselhoff (har-har- har) and metaphoric lines ("... I dunno why they're chasing us. This is such a mystery...") that would leave anyone's laughing their brains out.

And for those reasons alone, I'm gonna watch GOTG again for the 4th, 5th, 6th time or probably until the cinemas here don't show it anymore...
The long awaited sequel to the break out hit, Guardians of The Galaxy, is here! In 2014, the Marvel Studios original came out of obscurity to set box office records, introducing fans to a cast of heroes who aren't exactly your typical superheroes. Combining amazing special effects and comedy, the film quickly gained a cult following and critical acclaim, but can they defeat the biggest enemy of all, the curse of the sequel? The Guardians are back doing what they do best, with a new enemy on their tail, when they crash land on an uninhabited planet. Their rescuer comes in a form of a man who seems too good to be true, is he really there to help them or does he have something else in mind? The story in volume two is not as good as the first one, that was to be expected, but luckily it isn't far off. The characters are the same and this time they know each other a whole lot better, meaning the chemistry is better, the humor comes more quickly, and the magic is still there. Once again Chris Pratt is outstanding, it's still hard to believe he went from the annoying jock on Everwood to this charismatic megastar. The rest of the cast is also on it's game and we learn much more about the characters then we did in the first film. While not being as strong story wise, this film certainly hits closer to home, and everything is amped up from the special effects to the humor and even the soundtrack. I love these films and I hope there are a lot more of them, however I'd be remiss in not sharing my thought that something this good, especially with how the story evolves in the second film, is better suited for a weekly TV series than at most a handful of feature films. The Bottom Line, if you liked the first one, you'll love the second one.

I absolutely love the Guardians of the Galaxy series. No matter who you are there's something for you to enjoy. To go along with Vol. 2, Marvel put together a music video parody of the 70's disco style, featuring actors from the movie dressed up in ridiculous outfits from the era.

In the video, The actors who played the roles of Mantis, Kraglin, Yondu, Drax, Nebula, Gamora, and Starlord all appear in some form throughout the video, as well as David Hasselhoff (As Zardu Hasselfrau) and the movie's director, James Gunn. They all dance around and sing the Guardians theme song in it's Disco form.

Now back in the 70's, When Star wars first came out, Disco was huge. So to bring the 2 together, a group called Meco composed a star wars disco theme record, and it was very, very popular. This video is meant to be a parody of said theme. But it's a very enjoyable parody.
"Guardians of the Galaxy: Inferno" is a 3.5-minute music video spoof from 2017 and this was done in a way where it would look like the most colorful, over-the-top music video from the 1980s. I am not sure to which extent James Gunn worked on this one, but for his own sake I hope not too much. The man who seemed to have directed these approximately 200 seconds, David Yarovesky, I have never heard of him and that may be a good thing. David Hasselhoff's cult status was used on several occasions in the second GotG film and this little video we have here focuses on him entirely if we ignore Chris Pratt at the very end. However, I believe this one here is as bad as it gets for a DVD/BluRay add-on. It's not funny, it's not catchy, it's not creative, it's not smart, it has basically zero connection to the film and not even the biggest Hasselhoff fans can enjoy it because the thing is halfway over already when he appears for the very first time and then after just a few seconds, he is pretty much gone again until it's over. So I really cannot think of any target group at all who likes this. It's a failure, a huge mess and I have no idea what they were thinking. Major thumbs-down. Don't watch.

Peter Quill, abducted by intergalactic scavengers as a child, finds himself in possession of a mysterious orb which attracts widespread (and unwelcome) interest. Unwillingly accompanied by a small and ragtag band of oddballs, Quill must reluctantly adopt a role for which has never previously regarded himself as equipped: a hero.

Based on one of their less well known comics properties, the latest movie from Marvel Studios is a part of the Marvel cinematic universe, although it is unlikely to be clear immediately (other than to expectant speculating comic fans) to what extent. This does not matter: this is a fine standalone movie, best looked upon as the sort of thing a Star Wars movie would have been if a) it had an entertaining plot, b) George Lucas could write dialogue, and c) it remembered to be fun.

The story is fun, the eye candy is fabulous, and the script is crisp and often laugh out loud funny. But the thing which makes this film is the characters. The band of 5 "Guardians", based closely on the comics, work perfectly both in isolation and as a group, starting as warring individuals and growing into a team. Chris Pratt does well as the fundamentally decent but hardly heroic Quill - a likable character, with more to him than simply being a good-looking protagonist. Zoe Saldana's Gamora carries some baggage as does Dave Bautista's Drax. Bautista who, I understand is a wrestler, delivers a particularly well-rounded character: superficially one-note, there are great depths here, conveyed well, in a performance which manages to be both funny and tragic, sometimes at the same time. But the two favourites here are quite definitely Rocket (a genetically modified raccoon with anger management issues, voiced by Bradley Cooper), and a walking tree called Groot (his three-word vocabulary voiced by Vin Diesel). Their interdependent relationship is a joy, and Groot simply owns all the movie's best moments.

The 3D is completely unessential and adds little.

Did I say this movie was fun? It is.
If this is the best super hero movie ever made, I would be stopping watching the genre! I would simply lose faith in it. This kind of a terrible movie, and people are praising this crap to be epic. My god! An 8.1 (earlier it was something close to LOTR' s rating!!!) for this movie!

A completely predictable, terrible affair. Flat characters. Without any action sequences worth mentioning. Lots and lots of lame pathetic jokes. Terrible acting. A large number of kids (and adults with baby minds) giving a 10/10 rating. There is your Guardians of Galaxy. Enough said.

Before I begin this review, I want to say that I've never heard of this film before and I never realized it until now when I watched it on a DVD copy from a library. At first, I thought I was gonna be underwhelmed from the very start, but seeing as how I got to see Harrison Ford do his stuff throughout the film, I became totally speechless and after the very end, I agreed with fans of this movie and people everywhere (not the negative comments this movie got) that this is indeed one of the greatest science fiction movies ever made from the classic 80s even though I was more of a 90s kid back then.

The story is very interesting and it has a solid concept, the cinematography is magnificent, the visuals and the futuristic settings are a masterstroke, the action is the epitome of the term flawless and the music is great and has a great atmosphere to it. The direction is efficient, and the pacing is smooth, but what stands out the most is the cast. Harrison Ford did great as Rick and so did Daryl Hannah as the beautiful Pris, but the only actor who came close to stealing the show is Rutger Hauer as an outstanding villain.

I heard that whether or not there's gonna be a sequel to this film, but it's bad news that director Ridley Scott is still trying to handle the plans because I think that since this got a cult following and a fan base in the process, we'll be sure to get a sequel someday. So, overall, this movie is in fact a great movie for everyone to watch.
Audiences in 1982 did not respond kindly to "Blade Runner". Too downbeat, too slow-moving, and not the same kind of Harrison Ford performance we all fell in love with in "Star Wars" and "Raiders of the Lost Ark". Truth be told, I hated this movie, the first time I saw it. It took two and three further viewings to really appreciate what was going on here, and the movie soon became one of my all-time favorites, as a result.

Director Ridley Scott plunges his audience into a nightmarish vision of the not-too-distant future Los Angeles, complete with flying cars and industrialism run-amok. Other planets have been colonized for the elites, while the rest of humanity is left on Earth. The monolithic Tyrell Corporation manufactures Replicants (artificial humans that are near-indistinguishable from the real thing) , the latest version being the Nexus-6, for use on off-world jobs that are either too dangerous or unseemly for a real human. Four-year lifespans are implemented to keep the Replicants in line, and Blade Runner units (special police forces) patrol the streets to root out any infiltrating renegades.

Harrison Ford stars as Rick Deckard, a retired Blade Runner who's pressed into service when four Replicants (Rutger Hauer, Daryl Hannah, Joanna Cassidy and Brion James) hijack a shuttle and hide out on Earth. Their pursuit is to gain an audience with their maker, Dr. Eldon Tyrell (Joe Turkel). Turkel, meanwhile, has introduced a new version of the Nexus-6 in the form of Rachael, his administrative assistant (Sean Young). And Deckard finds his mission clouded as he slowly falls in love with the beautiful woman.

From an acting standpoint, Ford, Young and Hauer are the standouts. Ford delivers a low-key performance, brandishing his devil-may-care grin only sparingly. His portrayal of Deckard suggests a man who's trying to put all of the pieces together and make sense of it all; constantly uncertain. It's an ambiguous character (the good guy, but not so likable), and Ford truly sells it. Young really shines here, "humanizing" Rachael as the character faces its existential crisis. She's terrified and unstable when placed in a romantic situation and her heartbreak seems completely genuine after hearing Deckard callously drop the bombshell that she's not real. And Hauer, as the cerebral and most dangerous of the Replicants, plays up the childlike wonder of an emotionally stunted humanoid, while always keeping that lethal edge lurking underneath the surface. As good as the film's star is, Hauer absolutely steals the movie with his minute-long soliloquy at film's end.

Chief among the film's critical praises is its depiction of the dystopian 2019 Los Angeles; a city choking on its own technology and overpopulation. The streets swarm with all manner of ethnic varieties, all of them societal dregs (while the ones with money vacated long ago). Massive blimps float overhead touting the promise of a new life on the off-world colonies. Rain is constant, the skies are black, and foreign peoples violently mix into a salad bowl of clashing cultures, dominated by that of the Japanese (possibly the result of the early '80s concerns of Japanese takeover of L.A.). Advertizing reigns supreme, from blimps to billboards taking up the sides of skyscrapers.

It's a triumph of art direction, production design and cinematography. Scott has created a world that lives by its design; both repulsive and engrossing, at the same time. The streets are lit mostly by commercial neon, while interiors are lit by shafts, rays and baths of light (thanks to the brilliance of cinematographer Jordan Cronenweth). You can almost feel the steam rising from the streets and smell the grime on the payphones. No one in their right mind would want to live here, but it's the kind of place that's brimming with detail that leaves its mark; you're drawn to this vision, time and again. And let's not forget Vangelis' synth-noir music, which is less a score and more a mood exercise that wholly blends with the fabric of the overall movie's design. Total immersion, that score.

"Blade Runner" polarized audiences when it was first released, mostly due to its "leisurely" (as Gene Siskel famously put it) pacing and murky narrative. Style over substance. And I thought the same thing, at first, but further viewings proved me wrong. There's a lot going on here under the surface, the visuals just impress and constantly bring you back for another go-around. Ultimately, "Blade Runner" is a movie about ideas, from slavery to mild paranoia, and (chiefly) what it means to be human.

It's a movie that I've seen countless times, and I'm still ready to watch it again. If it's not the vast array of textural surfaces and thematic layering, it's the performances from Ford and Hauer that prove engaging (again and again). It's less a design aesthetic, more a totally immersive world that I totally enjoy returning to. It's nothing short of impressive that the same praise bolstering "Avatar" is even truer of a 30 year-old film lacking any CGI.

This was an impulse watch for me. Had to escape the house for a few hours cuz of noisy visitors. The movie itself was OK. Fairly entertaining, although felt sort've boring at some parts. The 'Groundhog Day' concept is pretty much unique in the horror genre, but the storyline really wasn't. It followed a fairly typical series of events and the twists weren't all that shocking. Also, the feel of the movie was odd, cuz sometimes it felt like a black comedy, other times it felt cheap and then it didn't even feel like a horror at all in some points. But overall, it's not bad. Even got jumpscared a few times (don't worry, overall wasn't too scary. It's scarier than 'It' though, so if you're looking for more horror, watch this instead). Would recommend.
Halloween weekends are certainly a bag of tricks and treats themselves. A variety of genres try to compete for the number one spot on the box office, and horror movies continue to try to prove their worth. My weekend reviews start with another film in the slasher collection that looks interesting to say the least. Like all horror films, the truth behind the vague trailers can take a number of forms and levels of quality, so I wasn't sure what I would get on this viewing. What is the verdict? As always read on to find out!

LIKES:

Surprisingly Deep Character: Most slasher films fail in terms of a gripping character to follow the journey with, in order to provide fodder for our demented killer. Surprisingly, Tree Gelbman (Jessica Rothe) has depth hidden within her superficial looks and sorority attitude. Seeing her character evolve over the film changed my attitudes towards her, especially as her sorrows began to emerge onto the field. And even more impressive is how balanced her multiple aspects were balanced into the story, to maintain the development that was so nicely done.

Censored: There are those slasher movies that go over the top to maximize the vomit inducing kills and dismemberments. Happy Death Day, fortunately, is not one of those movies. For a movie about repeating the same day over with a "deadly" conclusion, it keeps things rather clean and to the point, avoiding the mind scarring scenes that will be famous on YouTube. The PG-13 rating should assure you that this is a rather mild horror and won't leave you sleepless like some other films can.

The Mystery: If you have seen the trailers, you have probably been allured/intrigued as to who is behind that freaky baby like mask. That aspect carries on into the film as you try to piece the puzzle together and solve the Scooby Doo like case. It was the adventure of seeking those answers that kept me invested in the movie, searching for any slight hint to give away the surprise. Keep your eyes open, your minds active, and your thoughts running and you'll get it within 25 minutes, but otherwise enjoy the ride the director created.

It's fun: Movies that involve repeating the same day over and over again gets stale fast, because of cheap editing tricks to make the scene seem fresh. Fortunately, Death Day keeps things fun and fairly fresh in the 1.5 hour run time. This movie has plenty of chuckles thrown into the mix, many poking fun at the horror movie genre. Tree's dialogue itself has that aggressive, sorority girl element to it, filled with passive-aggressive compliments and sarcasm that are well-timed. Throw in some well-developed secondary comedy from secondary characters, and the fun just keeps on rolling with each passing day.

DISLIKES:

Not Scary: My friend and I both agreed that this movie lacked any real bite in terms of the scare factor. Oh sure, a creepy, knife wielding, baby face mascot wearing killer would have anyone afraid to walk a dark corridor in the real world. With the silver screen barrier though, the movie's horror element doesn't do much to build suspense or make you shrivel in your seats. Aside from a few jump scare moments, the comedy aspect of the movie will take over more than the scare component. Sorry you fear feeding fans, no dice on this one.

Little Over the Top: Ridiculous factors are all in good fun when they are timed well and not overdone. Happy Death Day sometimes lost its regulation with the overly ridiculous moments, leading to these eye-rolling proportions that were just eating up time. Some of the death scenes themselves fall in this category, alongside a few repeat sequences of Tree's journey across the quad. The running jokes themselves also get a little stale, especially when it comes to the rival sorority sister who was directed to be a little too aggressive my taste to take seriously. Oh well, got to love those superficial characters that are meant for comedy alone right.

Some unfinished story elements: While I'm surprised with how much of a story this movie had, no matter how cliché it was, there were still some underdeveloped aspects to the tale. One was a few of Tree's character development arcs, that started to blossom, only to die out like her character does. A few of these could have further expanded her character, bringing in other characters to help draw it out and adding that dynamic element I like to see. In addition, a few other plot elements were squeezed into the film in a rushed manner, sometimes feeling out of place until they were able to draw it back in with a well-placed plot element. Had the scares been better…this element would sting less, but the story element is a big part and could have used some fine tuning.

The VERDICT:

Happy Death Day is one of the more fun slasher films I have seen in a long time. It's a movie that will appeal to many with its fun pace, decent comedy, intriguing mystery, and character that keeps you invested in their life. While this was much better than my expectations, the movie still suffers some from imbalanced comedy gestures, unfinished story elements, and most importantly lack of scares. Therefore, go in there expecting a drama/comedy with a slasher twist and you've got the right approach to this movie. Yet, if you are looking for the next psycho thriller… hold your horses for a Redbox rent to capitalize on your investment.

You see that on TV in the morning, you always read about that stuff on newspaper.. etc. Corruption, Disgrace, Poverty, street kids, and many more. Deddy Mizwar as a director try to explain those thing with honest, no 'teaching' and no religion persuasive which in this movie is talk about Islamic ways. This is about Humanity, feel and Reality. You are not living in Hitler Regim which every regulation and rules are absolute. Trys To figure it out. This is a 'Mirror' for me, for you, and for everyone, especially for Indonesian.
