Back in 1991, there was renewed interest in Disney films. Beauty and the Beast happened to be one of the four big hits (along with The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, and The Lion King) that everybody went to see. It came at an appropriate time when Disney was recovering from shaky management from the 1980's, especially in the animation department.
There's not a lot about this movie I can say that hasn't already been mentioned. It has a nice story, wonderful songs, and great artwork. The artwork particularly stands out among most of today's Disney movies. It actually FELT like a love story that took place in France!
I recall seeing Beauty and the Beast around the time it first came out, but after seeing it again recently, I wanted to cry. Disney has been undergoing yet another era of shaky business, and their failures in the animation department have slowly been outweighing their successes. Ever since Pocahontas, although many of those films were actually good, Disney has seldom been able to measure up to the strength of their renaissance films (1989-1994). It really has me thinking about the good times...
Beauty and the Beast came to be a powerful movie, and still is to this day. It broke box office records among animated films at the time, its soundtrack earned it numerous awards, and it earned the Best Picture Oscar nomination in 1992. Back then, it seemed like things couldn't be better in the Magic Kingdom.
See it for fun. See it for magic. See it for old time's sake. See it with a date. Beauty and the Beast is for more than just for the Disney fans; it's for EVERYONE! It is HIGHLY recommended!
When I was younger, I remember watching this movie over and over again. Not only does it have clever, catchy songs (which I sing even to this day), but it has a good plot with colorful characters. I love this movie so much that in my art class, I'm doing a painting of Belle.
It takes place in a small French town, where Belle, a beautiful but "strange" (considered by the locals), lives with her father/inventor, who is considered crazy by the town. She loves reading, which it unusual to the town folk. Gaston, the town hero who is also a jerk, is determined to make Belle his wife, though she is in no way interested in him. One day, while lost in the woods, her father runs into an enchanted castle, where a prince-turned-beast now conceals himself and takes him [Belle's father] prisoner. Belle finds out about this and goes to his rescue, only to trade herself for her father's freedom. While being the Beast's prisoner, she and the former prince start to fall in love, much to the pleasure of the enchanted objects/servants.
