One day he is an A list actor getting praised for how talented he is & getting a nice fat pay check for every acting gig he does, he's making a living off his talent without having to get a day job & working with the likes of Steven Spielberg, Oprah Winfrey & a slew of other A-list actors on several A-list Hollywood movies, only to find himself in the past few years having to lend his talent to really bad B movies in order to try & put food on the table & keep things going. I mean he literally must have sat there on the set of the movie during his break thinking "Where did it all go wrong?".
DAY OF THE MUMMY, a dull, slow moving horror flick. While the acting is okay, the characters are so dull & one dimensional that no matter how hard the actors try to make their characters interesting, it makes no difference. There are no scares, suspense, tension or atmosphere & to top it all off, the box art is the biggest mis-representation of the film ever, as it features several well armed characters on the front ready for war & on the back, features someone blowing away hundreds of fast moving mummies moving towards them. There's no action like that of any kind period in this movie & there's only one mummy! The whole film moves at a snails pace & nothing ever happens in the film until the final ten minutes & even then it's not worth it! The film also contains a review from someone on the popular horror movie website "Dread Central" that states: "Get Ready For The Ride Of Your Life" if this is the type of movie that the reviewer on that website thinks is a major thrill ride of a horror movie, I'd hate to think what their idea is of a really bad one! The direction is rather bland as well.
Contrary to what the box art might have you believe, this film is actually a found footage film (sort of) since the story is told through a hidden miniature camera inside the lead characters eye glasses that he wears. Top billed DANNY GLOVER is seen through the entire film from beginning to end, but only in one location & even then it's in a small little picture on the left hand side of the screen, which tells me he must have filmed all his scenes in one day. Another top billed star WILLIAM MCNAMARA plays the womanizing treasure hunter hired by Glover to retrieve the stone, but he's only seen on camera for ten minutes tops, with the rest of the time he's off camera as we hear his voice talking to his comrades that are accompanying him on his journey.
Humorously, it seems that the film-makers behind this tripe have went online here on IMDb & gave the film a couple of positive reviews by using different user names, to try & throw off visitors curious to see if this film is worth a rental, since the vast majority of the reviews are negative, none of this comes to any surprise, in all my years of being a critic on this site, I've come across many users who have only wrote one review & it's always for a really bad movie that everyone is trashing & begging other people not to waste their time on. Said positive reviews by these "reviewers" usually has the person saying how everyone should lighten up & not listen to the negative reviews on the site & how everyone should not take the movie so seriously & how they had a really fun time watching the movie & then to try & cover up for themselves by usually making a light comment like "I agree the pace should have been a little tighter & the more of this or more of that blah, blah blah, this is all done to try & off set the heavy amount of negative reviews of certain films. What irks me about this, is not the fact that they are trying to counter the negative reviews, so much as it is that if they would only come on & offer an apology for making a film this bad, I might be gentler in my review.
All in all, DAY OF THE MUMMY is not recommended. It's a real shame really, since Mummies would make for some truly terrifying villains in a horror movie & it's been decades since we've gotten to see a really good one. In fact, we really need to see a really good, scary, atmospheric mummy movie & this is definitely not it! Not a sequel to an earlier 1980's horror film entitled DAWN OF THE MUMMY.

Only one Mummy movie, in my opinion, is worse and that's The Mummy Resurrected, which had eerily similar problems to the ones that this had. Day of the Mummy does have one redeeming quality(whereas The Mummy Resurrected had none) and that's the location of the inside of the Mummy's tomb, suitably claustrophobic and effectively creepy. In fact the locations in general are not too bad. But it was very difficult to enjoy them because the movie had such a dreary look and the way Day of the Mummy was shot was highly suggestive someone having the complete inability to keep a camera/video-recorder straight.
Day of the Mummy does use the found footage-like/picture-in-picture idea. This could have worked and could have potentially been creative, but it is way over-used and often at points where it was not needed. To say it was distracting was an understatement, so much so that a lot of the time it was used it took me right out of the movie. The script is incredibly weak, some of it sounds like it was improvised on the spot but most of it sounds like the actors only received the dialogue just minutes before and were reading from cue cards, hence why it was acted out in such an uninvolved and awkward manner. As for the story, there are glimpses of one but there is strong emphasis on the glimpses, what there is of story is painfully predictable, interminably slow in pace and lacking in everything you'd expect for a horror to work(suspense, tension, horror, fun, scares, thrills etc.).
The characters are walking clichés ridden to death, and they are not developed or interesting at all so it's impossible to root for them. To make things worse the acting is awful from actors who clearly did not want to be there in the first place, even from Danny Glover who squints and winces his way through his screen time giving the impression of why did I ever agree to do this. However that he is actually the best actor in the movie is testament to how bad the acting is, William McNamara is a long way from a dashing hero and actually looks bored out of his skull, even the most bored-sounding answering machine has more energy than him. Don't expect the Mummy/monster to save the movie, it doesn't look too bad but it's under-utilised, it acts intoxicated rather than imposing so it doesn't come across as scary at all and it's hard to shake off the feeling of that it's a man in a costume. Apparently the director has prior experience, but considering the ineptness of the direction here that's hard to believe.
In conclusion, awful movie in every way apart from the tomb location. Maybe see it to see for yourself how Glover fares here and how his career has gone down the toilet, otherwise while not quite as abysmal as The Mummy Resurrected Day of the Mummy should have stayed buried. 1/10 Bethany Cox
